Iceland is a very fascinating country. Many think of it as a country of contrasts. The name evokes visions of fairy-tales, it being the home of trolls and snow queens. There are 150 volcanoes, some of which become active from time to time, and 700 hot springs, many of which are harnessed to warm up the houses of the inhabitants and for swimming-pools, and some of the largest glaciers in Europe crown our mountain tops.
Without doubt, Iceland is a country of great diversity and many tourists have been surprised by the fine international standard of our restaurants, fashion shops, discotheques, theatres and cinemas. But modern city life has not made the inhabitants of the capital lose their respect and admiration for the power and beauty of nature - which is still to be found almost everywhere you look, unspoilt, inspiring and exhilarating. A thirty minute drive from the capital gives you a glimpse of volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls or geysers, all of which you can take in during a single day´s trip.
In Iceland we have everything that other modern societies can offer - and more: clean smog-free air, crystal clear water and a society devoid of violence.
