The Fairest Church in
Iceland

The Church of Stóri-Núpur

"In antiquity on earth a seed was sown,"
the words of the good psalmist,
the Rev. Valdimar Briem (1848-1930),
who lived for half a century at
Stóri-Núpur.
"That seed was the kingdom of God,
at first small."

The teacher Jón Ófeigsson (1881-1938),
born at Stóri-Núpur, was a model for
the painting of Christ preaching,
here as in six other altarpieces in
Icelandic churches made by
Ásgrímur Jónsson (1876-1958),
a famous landscape and
folk-tale painter.
